Now there are some pretty polarized opinions about this scene, probably because Loboto is a pretty polarizing character, especially after ROR. but I’m gonna throw my little opinion/theory in the hat anyway and see what happens.

so first off let me show you some things I noticed.
This is obviously a Brain Tumbler. What do Brain Tumblers do? As the Psychonauts Wiki puts it “The Brain Tumbler is a device that allows subjects to enter their own mind” furthermore at the beginning of this scene…
Loboto appears to be unconscious. So whatever made him so terrified was something that happened inside the brain tumbler, something from inside his own mind. Which brings me to my second observation:
Loboto is armed (pun absolutely intended) and unrestrained. As other fans have pointed out to me on Discord and through text messaging, this probably means that he’s here willingly.
so, what conclusions can we draw from this?
Firstly, I propose that Sasha is not actively torturing Loboto, as many have feared and hoped.
Now, we must ask some questions. Why would Loboto work with Sasha willingly? There are two (perhaps not mutually exclusive) possibilities
1. He has been caught and placed on trial by the Psychonauts, and has agreed to a deal which offers a lighter sentence in return for his cooperation.
2. he is having a redemption arc
Ok, so if Loboto is here voluntarily, why is he so scared?
Here’s what I think. Loboto is not a terribly introspective person, and his memory is notoriously poor. He is realizing, for the first time, that his entire life is basically a horror movie. And he is rightfully terrified both of what he’s been through, and what he’s done to others in turn.
